Housetraining a Puppy a Few Tips

When housetraining a puppy, she may have an accident on your floor or carpet, no problem, just clean it up. You need to be in a good, we can do it, that's okay, frame of mind.

You must have a lot of patience, you have to be kind, and most of all, keep in mind that you are the teacher. Puppies learn from consistency, so be consistent by keeping an eye on her at all times.

The average time a puppy may hold it's urge to pee is noted below. You may want to use this, if you plan to use a crate as a tool for housetraining a puppy. A crate will also help out if you plan to go on a trip, do some short errands, or need the time to cook dinner for your family.

When a puppy or dog is left in a crate, they most likely will not make a mess, unless left in it for a long period of time.

Then again, if the crate is way to big, your puppy will pee in one corner, and lay down on the other corner.

Helpful Tip

Some crates can be divided in half so you can use it as a puppy crate, then as she grows. just remove the divider.

Housetraining Puppy Tips

  • You must teach her where you want her to go, the place you set up for her in the house, and the spot, the same spot outside the house.
  • Puppies are like a peeing machine, best to keep an eye on her constantly.
  • Puppies need to go after eating, drinking, sleeping and playing, which is almost most of the time.

  • 3 signs to look for, so you can grab her gently, say, "NO" firmly, and walk fast, no running, to the spot where you want her to go. SNIFFING -- CIRCLING -- SQUATTING.
  • Make a schedule, set a routine, and stick to it.
  • Puppies need to be fed 3 -4 times a day. She needs to go 5 - 20 min. after eating.
  • Always use the same phrase when you catch her in the act, (she actually has to be peeing or pooping, not after, otherwise the correction will not work) say, "NO - NO" or "AH - AH" in a place that is not her spot.
  • Always use the same phrase when she goes in the right spot,(same as above, she actually has to be doing it) say, "Gooood Puppy", or "Gooood Girl".
  • Always praise her and give her a food reward, when she goes where she is supposed to go. ALWAYS! EVERY SINGLE TIME!
  • Do not ever rub her nose in her poop or pee. She will not understand what it means.
  • Puppies do not poop and pee in an area where they shouldn't to spite you, or to get you angry. Nature's calling, they just need to go.
  • Remember constant supervision, patience, persistence, love, and kindness will make housetraining a puppy, a task that will soon be only a memory.

Make this time a memory that you can look back upon, be proud, smile, and say, "Gooooood Girl".
