Dog Collars, Different Types and Uses

Dog collars come in several types, and along with the use of a leash, it is mostly used to control a dog while training and or during daily activities such as, going for a walk or a jog. Some people may pamper their pooch and buy a collar studded with gems, or the collar that may be fashionable at the time.

Some may not even use a collar when their furry friend is in the house, so they use other items to adorn their beloved pet. dog collars, buckle collar, martingale collar.choke collar

A dog collar is also used for identification purposes, in which one can attach dog tags with a dog's name, address, or medical information if needed.

Buckle Collars

Buckle collars or flat collars resemble a belt buckle and may include a metal loop to attach a leash and or dog tags. Like belt buckles, it comes with holes so one can adjust the collar to have a nice fit. These collars can also be made with a feature called a quick-release buckle. Flat collars are normally made of nylon, polyester, hemp or leather.

Flea collars

Flea collars are made with chemicals needed to repel fleas. These are usually used in addition to a flat collar.

Break-away Collars

Similar to the buckle collar, this has a safety mechanism that allows a dog to break free if using a lot of force.

Slip Collars

Also known as choke chains, choke collars, or slip chains are a length of nylon rope or chain with rings on either end. This can be formed into a loop which can then be put around a dog's neck, with a leash attached to the ring. When a dog pulls wearing this type of collar it will tighten or "choke" the dog until it stops pulling, thus relaxing the choking effect.

Prong collars

Also known as pinch collars, are a series of chain links with blunted open ends turned towards the dog's neck. Like the choke chain, when tightened, it pinches the loose skin around the neck and causes discomfort. This is designed to prevent the dog from pulling. One can put rubber tips on the prongs to prevent puncturing or scratching the skin.

Martingale Collars

This collar comes in two styles, with a chain loop, or fabric loop, and the option of buckles on both types.

Their no slip feature has made them a safety standard at many kennels and animal shelters.

This collar has two loops; the smaller loop is the control loop that tightens the the larger loop when pulled to prevent dogs from slipping out of the collar.

E-Collars

Electronic collars were developed to deliver an electric signal, vibration, tone, through contact points attached to a dog collar.

When used correctly it can address a wide range of behavioral problems. It can also help a dog become more well behaved and obedient without reducing drive or making the dog fearful.

This collar should be used under the supervision of a professional trainer, when used incorrectly, it can, make a dog fearful.

With the many types of collars in which you can choose, always be sure that you are educated in the use of each type. Always think about your dog's safety first.
