Basic Dog Training, Exercising is "Fun"damental

Basic dog training should include exercising, be creative and put some fun into exercising your pooch daily. A daily walk around the neighborhood or letting her out in the yard for awhile is all good, but you need to start mixing it up a bit.

Puppies and dogs can get bored, and when they get bored they tend to do things that are mischievous, troublesome, or even destructive.

If indoors, they may start chewing on things that they shouldn't, or worst yet, run rampant about the house as if on a search and destroy mission.

They think that turning over your favorite potted plant, is a game, and they love pulling pillows off the bed. Best of all, they want to help with the dirty laundry, so they insist to take them out of the basket and lay them all over the house.

If outdoors, they may dig up your garden looking for buried treasure or worst yet, try to dig under the fence to escape to find another person or dog to play with.

All dogs were born with the need to chew, dig, retrieve, and chase. With this in mind, think of games that include these urges.

Play some fun games like hide and seek. The one game I like, that can be done inside or outside, is to get her favorite chew toy and a small empty cardboard box. Show her the toy and hide it under the box. She should start to sniff around the box trying to figure out how to get her toy. After awhile she will find a way to tip the box over and retrieve her toy. This type of game does not last long, and once they get smart enough, it isn't much of a challenge, but it is a good game to stimulate the mind.

Get a tennis ball and roll it on the floor or in your yard, say,"Get the ball", and let her chase it down. You can train her to bring it back to you, making it a game that can last awhile.

Use frisbees or sticks for chasing, and retrieving, think of different exercising games to play and mix it in with basic dog training.

Some may spend a little extra money and set up an agility course in their yard. Cones set up in a line, a small see-saw, a small high-jump, a tunnel, and maybe a few more things. I'm sure you may have seen one of these on T.V., where dogs compete for accuracy, and their time to finish the course.

Speaking of agility and courses, I ran across this dog video while surfing through Hawaii Pet Network and was pretty much amazed at this dog named Roxy.

Her owner, Ozzie, is the founder of Hawaii Parkour, and he brings Roxy along with him while he is training. Roxy and Ozzie take basic dog training to the EXTREME!

Live near a beach? Does your dog love the water? What more can I say other than, "Surfs Up!"

Please, do remember, safety first when basic dog training, especially when in or around water.

There is a website that I found, where you can get a life jacket for your dog. See below.

So, be creative, and think of things that you and your dog can do together that is fun.

The level or type of exercises may vary depending on age, state of health, and breed or breed mix. Every dog needs exercise daily, some more than others. Dogs that are 6 to 18 months of age will need a lot of exercise, especially if she is from an active breed.

Basic dog training can be fun. Take a break from the how to, when to, and the why to of dog training. Go out and have some fun while exercising your dog, and maybe you can burn off some calories too!
